Think of the Netherlands, and you’ll inevitably think of tulips, the country’s most popular flower. And one of the most beautiful places to visit in the Netherlands showcases these and other spring bulbs in spectacular abundance. Keukenhof, otherwise known as the “Garden of Europe,” is located on the outskirts of the town of Lisse in what’s widely considered the “bulb belt” of the Netherlands. The largest public garden in the world, encompassing more than 70 acres of what was once the former kitchen (or “keuken”) garden of a large country estate, Keukenhof displays more than 700 varieties of tulips, which are at their height in April and May. But thanks to its massive commercial hot houses, the display continues almost year-round. In these, you’ll see endless rows of flowering tulips, along with thousands of hyacinths, crocuses, and daffodils.

Chora was once the capital town of Kalymnos in the center of the island. Above the town stands a big fortress of a Byzantine construction, built 300m above sea level. It comprises ruins of houses and cisterns and nine churches, two of which are renowned for their frescos. The view from the fortress is one of the most beautiful. Below you spread the valley of Pothia and the port, the gleaming sea and the island of Kos in the distance. Not far from Chora stands the Temple of the Kalydnian Apollo, a remnant of the Hellenistic period, built in Doric style. Parts of this ancient temple were used to build the church of “Jesus Christ of Jerusalem” believed to have been commissioned by Saint Helen or by the Byzantine Emperor Arcadius.
What can you see in Slovenia and Croatia and the region weather? The western third of the island of Mljet has been designated as a national park. Largely covered by dense woodland, it centers on two interconnected, turquoise saltwater lakes, one of which has an islet capped by a 12th-century Benedictine monastery, which you can visit by taxi-boat. Popular with nature lovers, the park offers plenty of things to do, including exploring the numerous paths that run through the woodland. There’s also a nine-kilometer trail that runs around the perimeter of the lakes, making it ideal for walking or mountain biking. The area is also popular for swimming and activities such as kayaking (kayaks can be rented to explore the lakes). There’s only one hotel on the island, but local families do rent rooms to visitors in summer, and a number of reputable campsites are also available.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of the most iconic structures in the world and it is famous for the fact that mistakes by the architects and engineers who created the tower caused its infamous lean. Almost everyone who visits Pisa in Italy wants to have their photograph taken in front of the wonky building. The tower was constructed throughout the 12th century and is the bell tower of Pisa Cathedral. The reason for the lean is that the ground on which it is built is soft and there were inadequate foundations for the structure. Over the decades, the lean increased. In the late 2oth century, engineers took steps to stabilize the structure. The tower has seven bells and stands at over 183 feet tall. See extra information at this website.
